Let me delve right in with this one! I’ve been absolutely friggin’ hooked on this podcast for the past few days. I’m like this with a lot of things, mainly when it comes to TV, but if I really like something I get a little bit obsessed, rush through and then feel a little disappointed once I get to the end. You know when you get that whole “oh well crap, what on earth am I meant to do now, nothing will fill this empty void” sort of feeling!? WELL, my current obsession is Serial and that is how I feel about it.
I’ve never really been a podcast kinda gal. I have an extensive music library as I like loads of different genres, a bit of pop, mostly pop punk and rock, but so much musical theatre as well. So whatever mood I’m in, I never really find myself short of something to listen to. However, fairly recently a lot of people have been recommending podcasts to me. At the weekend I was taking a trip to Manchester to meet up with a friend, but I thought the four hour round trip would be the perfect time to have something other than music to listen to. I’m SO glad I found Serial. It actually made the journey fly by and I didn’t feel as sad as I usually would when I left my friend and got onto the train home, because I was just so excited to listen to the next instalment.
So let’s talk about Serial. I’m a little late to the game here, okay I’m three years late to the game, but actually I sometimes think this is better. When the podcast was first released it was weekly and bi-weekly, but obviously listening after they’re all out there means you can move straight onto the next episode with no wait. It’s made by the people at This American Life, an American radio show made in Chicago which is SUPER popular and also available as a podcast. The whole series is about one true story, season one focussing on a man who’s been in prison for murder for fifteen years and season two focussing on a soldier who was held captive for five years. I was drawn to this when I saw someone talking about it on Twitter and went instantly to Google to find out more. True Crime/murder mystery/thriller is MY GENRE. I love it. Be it TV, film, books, anything really and I’m sucked in, so this sounded like exactly the sort of thing that would grip me. I was not wrong!
When Netflix released Making a Murderer I was super excited and thought I would love it, which I did, at first. I didn’t actually watch the whole series though. Because everyone at the time was watching it and talking about it, with some people obviously reaching the end before others, there seemed little point in finishing it as I knew the outcome of it all. I keep comparing Serial to that, it’s a (sort of) similar story of miscarriage of justice in America , I mean, or not if you choose to believe he’s guilty. SO MANY QUESTIONS. I actually found it all really educational, mainly when it comes to America’s legal system and just SO interesting. It’s the sort of thing that has you questioning everything; how you remember things, how you view the people around you, how you gauge people’s personalities. I’m sure I was pulling so many strange, confused faces whilst listening to it on the train. I got through season one in two days and I’m currently listening to the second, not really the same sort of subject, but equally as gripping. It’s hosted by Sarah Koenig, a journalist, who spent over a year of her life delving into the case file of Adnan Syed, the man who is currently serving his life sentence in prison for murder.
I think I’m going to download a load of other podcasts now, I’ve heard My Dad Wrote a Porno is hilarious and I think they’ll be great to have on whilst I’m cross stitching and can’t really focus massively on the TV. A lot of you will likely have already listened to Serial, if you have leave me a comment or a tweet or something because I need someone to chatter to about it! I’ve seen through my post season one Google search of everything Serial that they’re making a spin off called S-Town, I’m not entirely sure what that will be about but I’m hoping and guessing it will be just as intriguing. I’m also patiently waiting to hear any word on whether we’ll also be getting a Serial season three. I really hope so, I’m hooked!
