Hello gang! It’s been a while, I know. I’ve been working a lot, stitching a lot and to be perfectly honest just haven’t had the blogging mojo. But I’m back because I have some stuff to say. And it’s all to do with the season 7, final ever, Pretty Little Liars finale. I’m gunna go ahead and point out the obvious, THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS. Do not read on if you haven’t watched 7×20.
I spent the whole of Wednesday trying as hard as possible to avoid social media for fear of spoilers. I muted anything vaguely linked to PLL on Twitter and did my best to steer clear of Facebook for as long as humanly possible. Now I can’t say that I’ve been here since day one, in fact I only started PLL from the beginning on Netflix about two months ago, however as the queen of binging I managed to catch up before the final two episodes aired. I was so excited about a 90 minute episode! I already knew that the episode was going to jump forward a year and I was pretty confident behind the theory of Twincer aka Spencer Hastings has a twin. I like happy endings. So I knew exactly what I wanted as an outcome for all of the girls. I mean let’s face it, hands up if you DIDN’T want Spoby, Haleb, Ezria and Emison!?! If you just raised your hand I’m kicking you out! Buh bye. SO, I sat down ready to watch, curled up on the sofa with coffee in hand, excited to finally find out the identity of A.D! Although I was confident it would be revealed that Spencer had a twin, I didn’t necessarily think she would be A.D. I just couldn’t see past the blatantly UN-SPENCER-LIKE scenes in the airport and when she asked Toby for a goodbye kiss? ~insert scratch chin emoji here~
Overall I DID enjoy it. I received loads of messages once I announced on Twitter that I’d finished it of people saying how utterly disappointed they were. I can’t say I whole heartedly agree. Don’t get me wrong, I still have SO many questions. I’ve watched multiple interviews in which I. Marlene King, show creator and director of 7×20 said that every question we’ve ever had would be answered, BIGGEST PRETTY LITTLE LIE EVER MARLENE GAL! As much as I understand actors have other work going on, Aria’s brother wasn’t present at her wedding. Why on earth did they tease the whole mom’s in the basement scenario as if we would get an explanation for that AND THEN DIDN’T!? That was cruel. I love the drunk wine moms though. Snaps for that, “GET IN MARIN”! If anyone can figure out how Spencer knew which poetry book Toby was referring to, please let me know. There’s SO much more we needed to know about Bethany Young, also about Noel Khan and his motives. TELL ME MORE about the NAT club. I could go on, but no Marlene, you did not even slightly answer all of our questions and this for me was the major hitch to the episode and made in feel rushed. I was glad the first part was spent tying up the girls’ relationships etc because I really desperately wanted that to happen. But couldn’t they have started to do this in the episodes running up to the end?
I can’t get on board with people saying the finale was unrealistic. This show has ALWAYS been unrealistic. Everyone thought Ali was dead for two years and no one really batted an eyelid when she returned. Various people escaped from a mental institution, or managed to find their way in. Teenagers hacked police software, got away with murder, blinded a girl, built a doll house and held people captive. I mean that bloody screen when CeCe had them in the doll house!? Come on. But surely that’s part of why we love it? It’s so crazy and bizarre and unrealistic. One of the many reasons I love escaping in a new TV show. Nothing was ever normal in Rosewood.
I feel compelled to mention Troian Bellisario here. I adore the woman. I honestly think she’s fantastic, not just as an actress but also as a person. We all know where this is going though… that accent. THE ACCENT. I’ve seen comments from Americans making a slight attempt to defend it. But no one should ever have signed off on that. Dear lord it was awful, “allow love”. However, I didn’t necessarily think what happened was massively predictable. I’m glad A.D didn’t turn out to be one of the Liars cos, that’s stupid they didn’t torture themselves? But she kind of was. I saw something earlier saying the season 7 poster was a dead giveaway for it, which I honestly hadn’t noticed myself. See how Spencer is the only one with both eyes showing, looking like she’s framed by the black hoodie? Pretty smart. I was also totally shocked that it turned out to be Twincer/Alex that slept with Toby before he left town and not Spencer. That really hurt, guys. I also feel like I need to jump in here to defend Aria’s first wedding dress. The one she was wearing before Alex took Ezra captive and he didn’t turn up. When Alex told one of the babies that Wren was their dad, SAY WHAAAT!? Poor jilted Aria and then you all slagged off her dress. I liked it. However, by the actual eventual wedding she was onto her third dress, very unnecessary *rolls eyes*.
MONA. Gosh I love Mona. I feel like she really was given her happy ending. I’ve read a lot of posts saying things like “how did she get Alex and Mary into the doll house”, the seeming cop that came in to arrest the two of them in the underground bunker was the guy she kissed in the doll shop in France, apparently her boyfriend. It was as if she has orchestrated the whole thing for her own gain, coming out as the winning and true A. Full circle, just like that final scene. Which I loved by the way. Feel free to tell me you hated it but I’m a sucker for stuff like that in art. Cheers Marlene.
I should probably wrap it up here. I think I’ve forgotten things, but please leave a comment and tell me whether you loved or hated it or even if you felt a bit “meh” about the whole thing. Tell me, we can discuss. Also drop me a comment or message if you have any recommendations of shows I can get stuck into now it’s all over! You’ve been great, PLL and I will miss you. Thanks for reading.
